What Does Discovery Mean?

Everybody has different ideas of what discovery means. Mine is probably different from everyone else. I think discovery means to explore new things. You probably need tools to discover. In my picture I am using tools to discover a fossil bone. I cannot wait to discover in the Discovery Center.

What Makes an Effective Professional Arcade Game?

To make a professional arcade game it takes lots of patience and building. The title of the game I reviewed is Sphere Runner. The creator of the game is David Carachelo. The object of the game is to move the rockets and fill in all the bubbles without getting hit by a fireball. You move the rocket with the arrow keys on your keyboard. When you fill in all the bubbles on the grid you move on to the next level. You start with three lives. You get more lives each time you beat a level. I would give the game a three star rating. You win the game by filling in all of the spheres with Sphere Runner. If you win the game the screen says congratulations and you get the total amount of points you earned.

To build this game, you would need Army men, marbles, grid paper (black), slingshots and hands. The game would cost about $51.99 to buy. It would cost about $100.00 to build.

The title of the game is Sphere Runner. You can find this game at this URL address:

Design Brief
What is the Concept Design of My Crusie Arcade Game?
The name of our Crusie Arcade is Soccer Striker. You have to flick the ball into the net without knocking any of the Army men down that are located on the top side of the game, and you get five tickets if you make a goal without knocking any down. If you knock the Army men down you lose 1 ticket. I think it is a 3 out of 1-4 rating in difficulty. You win the game by flicking the ball in the net. You get Army men or 5 tickets. The directions are found on the front of the game.

It is an orthographic design that shows a specific picture of our game. It shows where most of the Army men are in position. The top of our orthographic design shows the overview of the Army men’s heads. The side shows the Army men standing up. The front side shows the directions and some Army men are shown. You see the nets, too.

To build this game you need cardboard, tape, scissors, Army men, net, and hard work! I think it will take 2-4 weeks to complete. A problem I foresee is the Army men getting knocked down too often.

What were the Results of Testing Our Game?
Examiner: Mr. and Mrs. Angelos

Date: 2/5/13

Praise: Fun design- we like the pictures on the side (design). Concentration needed to find the path.

Question: Can we bounce the ball over the Army men?

Polish: Maybe make a border to keep the ball in the game

Student Comment: You visited our Crusie Game, Soccer Strikers!! Thank you for your nice comment. You do need lots of concentration to find the path to the goal. We worked very hard on the design. No, you cannot bounce the ball over the men. You can only roll or flick the ball. Yes, almost everybody suggested making borders, and we will consider doing it. We will make a border so we do not have to chase the ball every time it goes off the side. It is a very good idea. Thank you for letting us know what you think.

Examiner: Mrs. Curlett

Date: 1/31/13

Praise: Easy to play- all skill levels. Exiting.

Question: Are directions on game correct? And do you need a box to shoot from – like a foul line?

Polish: Some “men” may just be placed on game board to make them easier to knock down

Student Comment: You played our cardboard game, Soccer Strikers!! We did not want to make it too hard to play. You do need a bunch of different skills to win. We are glad you think our game is exiting. We found out the directions are not correct, but when the next players came we explained the directions in a different way so they could understand. Yes, we made a “play from behind” line. We also did that right after you made your comment. We are glad you made all these wonderful comments.

Examiner: Mrs. Porter

Date: 1/29/13

Praise: Game was fun! Liked having practice time.

Question: Do you need two sides open? I think that you should set up boundaries so ball doesn’t go out.

Polish: Unclear how prizes system works. Directions about prizes need work. For example one goal earns 5 tickets, hard to understand voki, small sides would be great, also backstop behind goal.

Student Comment: You played our arcade game!! Thank you very much! Practice makes perfect. Practice makes perfect because if you practice you get better, but if you do not practice you will not get better. Yes, we have been thinking about small sides the whole time. Small sides are a very good idea. Yes, I will make the voki better because I want you to hear what he has to say. Ok, we will make the directions and voki easier to understand. A backstop behind the goal would be great.

Make It Better
How Can We Make the Crusie Arcade Game Better?
What can we do to improve our Arcade Creation?
I think we could make Soccer Strikers (our arcade game) better by adding side walls so we do not have to chase the ball every time it rolls off the side.
Specifically, how would we do this?
We would do this by getting a big piece of cardboard and cutting it in half. Then we will tape them onto the sides.
Reflection on Process
What did you learn to do with the Crusie Arcade Project?
I learned how to make an arcade game out of card board.

What do you know now that you didn’t know before doing the Project?

I now know how to make a Voki which is a figure on a website who talks to people.

What can you do know that you couldn’t before doing this project?
Thanks to this project, I can make a box out of cardboard.
What did you like about the project that helped your learning?
I liked making the direction and prize paper. It helped my learning because it gave me so many good ideas for prizes, and I can use those directions to make a game for me and my friends to play.
What could have been done differently to help your learning?
I should have thought of more ideas to improve our game. That would have helped my learning because some of those ideas would have taught me things.
A Final Reflection:

I made a cardboard arcade game called Soccer Strikers! I think we could make Soccer Strikers (our arcade game) better by adding side walls so we do not have to chase the ball every time it rolls off the side. We would do this by getting a big piece of cardboard and cutting it in half. Then we will tape them onto the sides. The building procedure took a very long time. Through this process I learned how to make an arcade game out of cardboard. First, I came up with ideas of how to build the game. Then, I drew an orthographic design. Next, I made a PowerPoint including a title slide, a rules slide, a prizes slide, and a directions slide. After that, I built the game. Finally, other people in the Lower School played my game. During this arcade process, I learned how to make a figure on a web site talk. I came up with the design by drawing what I thought a soccer game should look like, and I just copied off of the design. We built the game by building the structure out of cardboard and then I taped it together. I felt it was a very interesting process to go through. I thought it was interesting because I learned so much during the process. I encountered the problem of it falling apart a lot because I did not put enough tape on. I felt that my final project was as good as a real arcade game. All and all I feel like this project was an amazing experience.
